Smoking Sucks - French anti-smoking ads spark outrage

Young smokers tend to know that smoking is dangerous for the health, but never really think that the health problems are going to affect them, hence they don't really engage with anti-smoking advertising that highlights the health risks. It is thought that this younger population may respond better to the shorter term consequences of smoking, such as appearing less attractive to the opposite sex, or as this French ad agency explained, persuading teens that smoking as an act of rebellion is really showing subservience to messages created by the smoking industry. These French ads have created a fair amount of controversy, as you might imagine; do you think they are appropriate? Do you think they would be effective in persuading smokers to quit or teenagers not to start? Read more here.

Cigarettes go up 37p

In my experience as a smoking cessation advisor, the most common reason that people come to our service to quit smoking is to protect their health, and the financial side is just an added benefit. However there are still many smokers who want to quit smoking to save money, who have just as much luck as those quitting for health reasons. If you are a smoker you most likely already know that the price of 20 cigarettes is going up 37p in April this year with the new budget. This is 5% above inflation. George Osborne said "there is strong evidence that increasing the price of cigarettes deters people from smoking". We have covered this in an earlier post, whether it is true or not there has never been a better time to quit smoking. If you are interested in NHS specialist support, including the latest stop smoking medications, call us now 0207 882 8230.

Tobacco use and pathological gambling

There may be links between pathological gambling and tobacco use. Do you know anyone who gambles a lot and smokes? Most of us could probably think of someone. Research has found that daily tobacco use in pathological gamblers (those actively receiving treatment) was high and that tobacco use is associated with stronger urges to gamble.

Is it easier to quit when you are older?

Some people think it is too late or they are too old to give up, however there is a big improvement in quality of life after quitting. You might think that the older you get the harder it is to quit, as these smokers are very dependent smokers, however quit rate data from 2010-2011 shows a gradual increase in the quit rates as you go up the age categories - the older quitters have more success! If you are interested in quitting call the Smokers' Clinic today on 0207 882 8230.
