Most Smokers want to quit, but few suceed. Why?

Recent reports from the States suggest that as much as 70% of the smoking population say they want to quit, and more than half have tried in the last year, but less than 10% have suceeded? Why is this? The most likely reason is that they are trying to give up by themselves, without the behavioural and pharmacological support of stop smoking services.
